Vocabulary Study Strategies

Starting this week, students will have vocabulary words to practice and learn. Instead of learning just the definition, we are focusing on synonyms(words that mean the same) for the words. We will alternate between spelling and vocabulary. Some of the words are from our read aloud, No Talking! by Andrew Clements, and some are taken from a grade level vocabulary list. There are many proven study strategies to help retain the meaning of vocabulary words. One site, Quizlet, has fun, online games and printable flashcards to help students study new vocabulary words. During this coming week, I encourage you to help your child explore this beneficial resource and maybe even enjoy playing a vocabulary game together.

Additionally, students have a vocabulary practice packet for homework, and if all is complete by Friday, they will receive 5 bonus points on their test!

Here is a list of the new words and their meanings:

  • 1. adapt: adjust, change
  • 2. adjust: alter, adapt
  • 3. appoint: choose, assign
  • 4. chant: song, chorus/to repeat (a phrase, saying, etc.) rhythmically
  • 5. commotion: disturbance, disorder
  • 6. cope: manage, handle, deal
  • 7. glee: joy, happiness
  • 8. grief: sorrow, regret
  • 9. jittery: nervous, shaky
  • 10. official: authentic, real, valid
  • 11. pledge: promise
  • 12. romp: play, frolic
  • 13. startle: surprise, shock
  • 14. sweltering: scorching, burning
  • 15. triumph: victory
  • 16. vessel: ship
