Reading Goals & Expectations

Hi Families,

Today, students began working on their reading goals for the second nine weeks.  They took some time to reflect on their progress so far this year and to set new goals for the new nine weeks.

Students have three ways of demonstrating their steady progress toward achieving their reading goals each nine weeks.  Based on the standards, every fourth grade student is expected to read at least six books each nine weeks, so I help students break that goal into smaller parts through our daily, in-class reading log, the nightly, at-home reading log, and the Reading Bingo goals & activities.

At-Home Reading Logs are due every Monday.  Every week, students should read for at least 140 minutes(NEW GOAL starts on Monday) and log it on their At-Home Reading Log.  This is their way of showing evidence of their progress outside of school.  They also use the same reading log to keep track of their daily, in-class reading.  If they are reading EVERY day at home and in school for a good amount of time, they should absolutely meet their goals.  The Reading Bingo check-points help them plan out their reading goals for each book and keep on track for the nine weeks.

How can you help?  Please be sure your child is reading each and every night. Daily reading is the single most important thing your child can do to improve his or her reading skills. As your child works on his/her reading goal for this nine weeks, please help me monitor your child's progress by asking them about what they're reading and how they're progressing toward their goal. Also, please keep track of the Reading Bingo check-point due dates, which are posted in the room, included in this e-mail, written in your child's planner, and they have a copy in their reading folder.

Your Reading Bingo book responses are due on the dates listed below.  This schedule will help you manage your time and also balance out the responses over the course of the quarter.  The entire Reading Bingo assignment is due on Wednesday, January 18th.  Please note that no late Bingo cards will be accepted due to the fact that you have an entire nine weeks to work on your reading goals.

REMEMBER:  Reading Bingo is part of your reading grade. It is designed to help your grade and give you credit for the time you spend reading on your own. However, if it is not completed, it will negatively impact your reading grade.

Due on or before Friday, November 4th = 1st Response

Due on or before Friday, November 18th = 2nd Response

Due on or before Friday, December 2nd= 3rd Response

Due on or before Wednesday, December 14th  = 4th Response

Due on or before Friday, January 6th = 5th Response

Due on or before Wednesday, January 18th = 6th Response
(This is the day the entire Reading Bingo assignment is due!)
